눈치채다

nun-chi-chae-da · literally “Catch the eye-sense”

♪ From the song NEON by A2O LITE, 2026

Situation: You're planning a surprise party and your Korean friend whispers 걔 눈치챘어? You ask AI what it means.

✕ What AI tells you

Translates it as 'Did she notice?', so you think it's about seeing something in plain view.

Why it fails: 눈치채다 means sensing something that hasn't been said: a secret, a plan, someone's real feelings. It comes from 눈치, the Korean skill of reading the room. The word appears in A2O LITE's 2026 debut song NEON.

✓ How it's used

Use 눈치채다 for hidden things (secrets, feelings, plans). For something you simply see, use 알아차리다 or 보다.

  • 걔 눈치챘어?

    gyae nun-chi-chae-sseo

'Did she catch on?' — about a surprise or a secret

  • 너 진짜 눈치 없다.

    neo jin-jja nun-chi eop-da

'You're so clueless' — a common, mildly rude complaint among friends

  • 상사 눈치 보느라 퇴근을 못 했어요.

    sang-sa nun-chi bo-neu-ra toe-geu-neul mot hae-sseo-yo

'I couldn't leave because I was watching my boss's mood'

Cultural nuance, in depth

눈치 is one of the most important ideas in Korean social life: reading what others want without being told. 눈치 빠르다 (quick to read the room) is praise; 눈치 없다 is a criticism. See also 눈칫밥, eating while feeling unwelcome. 눈치채다 is written as one word.
