쩔어

jjeo-reo · literally “(Slang) It's intense”

Situation: You post a dance cover and a Korean friend comments: 와 쩐다.

✕ What AI tells you

Fails to recognize the slang, or confuses it with 절다, which means 'to limp' or 'to be soaked'.

Why it fails: 쩔다 is casual slang for something extreme. Your friend is saying 'Wow, that's amazing.' BTS's 2015 song 쩔어 (English title 'Dope') made the word known to fans worldwide.

✓ What Koreans actually say

쩔다 = extreme, usually 'awesome'. Use it only with friends. With seniors, say 정말 대단하세요 or 멋있어요.

  • 와, 쩐다!

    wa, jjeon-da

Friends: 'Wow, that's insane (in a good way)!'

  • 오늘 더위 쩐다.

    o-neul deo-wi jjeon-da

It can be bad too: 'The heat today is brutal'

  • 정말 대단하세요.

    jeong-mal dae-dan-ha-se-yo

Polite version to a teacher, boss or elder: 'That's really impressive'

Cultural nuance, in depth

쩔다 only says something is extreme; context decides whether it's praise or complaint. It sits with other casual intensifiers like 대박 and 미쳤다 ('that's crazy'). All of them are fine with friends and in comments, and all of them sound careless to a boss or an elder.
