-아/어 내다

-a/eo nae-da · literally “Do and put out”

Situation: You passed TOPIK level 4 after two tries and want to text your Korean teacher 'I did it!'

✕ What AI tells you

Writes 내가 했어! or 제가 했어요!, which sounds like 'I was the one who did it.'

Why it fails: 했어 just states who did it. 내다 after a verb adds 'all the way through, despite difficulty'. 해냈어요 is the triumphant 'I did it!' Koreans actually say.

✓ What Koreans actually say

Verb + 아/어 내다 = pull through, achieve against the odds. Use it when effort and difficulty are the point.

  • 선생님, 저 해냈어요!

    seon-saeng-nim, jeo hae-nae-sseo-yo

To a teacher: 'I did it!'

  • 힘든 시간을 잘 버텨 냈어요.

    him-deun si-ga-neul jal beo-tyeo nae-sseo-yo

'You got through a hard time' — praise or comfort

  • 원인을 알아냈어요.

    wo-ni-neul a-ra-nae-sseo-yo

'I found out the cause' — figured out after digging

Cultural nuance, in depth

내다 ('put out, produce') turns effort into a result. It's everywhere in encouragement: 이겨 낼 수 있어 ('You can overcome this'), 견뎌 내다 ('endure'). That's why it's a favorite in K-pop lyrics, award speeches and comfort messages. Without 내다, the same sentences sound flat.
